In order to be prepared for our busy Fall performance calendar, we start in late July with Band Camp to learn music and marching fundamentals which are utilized in all of our performances.
All Region Music is a great tool for building musicianship in high school band students. All Region is the first step on the multi level process which ultimately leads to All State Band membership.
A concert band is able to achieve the most desirable degree of clarity, cleanliness of melodic lines, ensemble intonation, etc., at a size of about 50 – 60 members. Larger programs, therefore are able to seat two and sometimes even three concert bands during the Spring Semester. This also provides students with an opportunity to perform music which most accurately allows for performance of music at their maximum level of proficiency.
he most efficient way to learn parts, clean up fingerings and articulations, perfect intonation, and develop characteristic timbre on individual instruments is through small group rehearsals – i.e., section practices.
While all of our Band activities and performances are fun, we also just occasionally enjoy loading up for just a good, plain, fun trip. It’s part of the complete Band experience!)
The limited schedule time of the daily school schedule quite simply, does not allow sufficient time to perfect our music to the high degree of performance quality for which we strive. After school rehearsals/practices, quite simply, gives us the time to “finish the job” for top level performances.
Small Ensemble music in the Classical Music World is know as Chamber Music, music composed to be performed in small rooms or chambers. Chamber Music, or Solo & Ensemble Music has grown in popularity to a separate genre of music for Band students. It provides performance opportunities on music of a very high level of quality from the many different Eras of music composition throughout the Musical History of Western Civilization.
The State of Texas is divided into 21 UIL Music Regions. The Regions are combined into 5 UIL Music Areas. Each Music Region in the State seats All Region Bands through competitive auditions. The very top percentage of the All Region Bands then qualifies for the Area level Audition. Each Music Area consists of 4 – 5 Regions. From the Area Audition, the very top percentage of students then qualifies for membership in one of the Texas All State Bands or Orchestras. The All State Bands/Orchestras perform each February in conjunction with the Tesxas Music Educators Association Annual Convention in San Antonio. It is an incredible musical experience and an opportunity for students to qualify, often, for full ride scholarships to the College or University of their choice.
